Guerilla Garlic

I love sowing seeds. It’s sad I know, but true. For the few weeks after sowing I just have to check the propagator every time I pass it, looking for any new signs of life – another seed germinates, another victory. It’s the same every year, each new variety a fresh challenge.

A seedling from a 4 year old Chilli seed

A couple of weeks ago, I found two seeds of Chilli Bhut Jolokia (not the easiest item in the world to geminate, sometimes taking five to six weeks) that had been sitting at the back of the seed drawer for four years. Three weeks later and I am the proud owner of a strapping seedling (that may be an exaggeration) which will, in time, present me with the hottest chilli peppers ever to grace this planet.

Alas, germination can also cause a problem. For as my little seedlings flourish and gain in size and strength, the time for pricking out and potting on arrives. How is this a problem? Well I only have limited rooms for aubergines, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers around the greenhouse, conservatory, patio and garden and I hate to part with these little seedlings nurtured with my own fair hands. I pass plants on to friends and neighbours but still have too many and I can’t face destroying the rest.

I thought I had found the answer to my dilemma last season with a bit of ‘guerilla gardening.’  I tried a bit of furtive planting in the flower beds (my wife’s area, strictly off limits) but when the fruits appeared – small tomatoes, tiny peppers, garlic plants – the games was up. It looks like I need a bigger garden.

A Suttons Garden in Pakistan

Kalim Farooqui's gardenWe’re always pleased to see pictures of our seeds and plants and love to share them with our customers. Every so often we get some photos that take your breath away – and this collection of photos from Kalim Farooqui are definitely breathtaking.

Kalim has been a loyal customer of Suttons since 1983 when he used to buy the seeds from our (now closed) shop in central London and for the last 15 years he has been buying through our Garden Clubs Discount Scheme.

In his fantastic garden in Pakistan, Kalim creates these fantastic displays using only Suttons Seeds and the garden plays host to an Annual Garden Party which is attended by, among others, Britain’s Deputy High Commissioner to Karachi. It really is inspiring to all of us at Suttons to see our seeds achieve such spectacular results. The full album of photos is at http://gallery.me.com/kalimfarooqui/100172

Flowers for people in a hurry

Many people are daunted by the thought of growing flowers thinking it will be too hard to get a beautiful display when growing from seed or very young plants. They go to the garden centre and buy expensive large mature plants for an instant garden colour, but it doesn’t have to be that way.  Many varieties of seed are easy to grow, especially hardy annual types, which can most often be sown where they are to flower.

Fast flowersHere at Suttons we have tried to make it easy for you to spot the easy to grow seeds by putting a selection of them into our ‘fastflowers’ range.  A collection of garden favourites such as night scented stock, viola and sunflowers which can all be sown direct and will flower in 6 to 12 weeks depending on the variety. They are ideal for beginners or if you want to get your garden off to a flying start with the minimum of effort.

But remember seeds are not just the only way to get a colourful garden with little effort.  Many people just don’t realise how easy it is to grow from bulbs. Say ‘bulbs’ and people immediately think of daffodils and tulips but there is a large range of bulbs, corms, roots& tubers that come under the heading of summer bulbs that are also easy to grow and provide masses of colour for very little effort.  And even better, unless you dig them up by accident when weeding, many can be left in the ground until next year so take even less effort the second year. If you look at their stunning colours and rose like flowers you will see why begonias are one of our best sellers and ho could resist the fragrance of oriental lilies.  And all of these are so easy to grow, just plant at the correct depth and wait for the results!
